Up Your Alley Fair - San Francisco - California

Up Your Alley Fair - BDSM Market

Held every year on the last Sunday of July, the "Up Your Alley Fair" fills Folsom Street with vendors selling leather and BDSM goods. It also includes a sound stage at the end of Folsom Street used for dancing. The Fair is located in San Francisco's "South of Market" district on Dore Alley between Folsom and Howard Streets and the adjoining block of Folsom Street between 9th and 10th Streets.

Music & Vendors & Leather: Oh My!

In 1985, the first Up Your Alley Street Fair was held on Ringold Street (between 8th and 9th Streets) The event was eventually moved to Dore Street 1987 and has continued yearly ever since. The thinking behind the event was to demonstrate that the South of Market area was alive and well with its own community and that local redevelopment would need to keep this in mind.

Starting later in the morning, the area is filled with vendors, beer sellers, voyeurs, costumed participants and just about anything else you'd expect to see at the largest BDSM festival in the city. Tickets can be purchased at any entry and a portion of the cost goes to various local charities. It also entitles you to a discount on beer purchases over the day (usually anywhere from $1-$2), so everyone wins.

The area is closed to public transportation and cars, but getting into the area is not a problem and public transit will be your best bet. If you can get yourself anywhere near the downtown area, you'll be able to wlk right into the event. Try parking a little farther out and you won't feel too crowded.

The crowd is varied, however everyone is polite and friendly and obviously gay-positive. Leather and bondage are the words of the day and there will be plenty of demonstrations and vendors to keep you interested. If you aren't aware of what a "Sounding Rod" or "Puppy Booth" is, you're in for a great surprise.

You can also expect it to be fairly warm outside, so bring some sunscreen and a hat and you should be fine. There are also tons of stores to buy whatever else you may need.

EVENT ATTITUDE TO NUDITY:

Naked and semi-naked people are all over the place and it is quite welcome. You might even find some casual sex happening off in the corners somewhere.

EVENT ATTITUDE TO CAMERAS:

Cameras are okay, as the event is held on public streets. Beware of filming anything of a more intimate nature as the participants may appreciate the attention.
